In plain words

I suffered in pain while I thought He was far away.

But now He is right here, ever-present, and I receive His guidance.

The pain was thinking the One was far away — the joy is discovering it was right here all along.
The deeper layer

This one says the pain came from thinking the One was far away.

Dookh ghano jab hotay door — "I suffered a lot while I thought He was far away." Ab maslat mohi milee hadoor — "but now He is right here, and I receive His guidance."

The pain was never real distance. It was the mistake of thinking the One was far. Think of searching the whole house for your glasses while they sit on your head. They were there the whole time. Another shabad in this raag says it plainly: God is right here.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever ached for something that turned out to be right beside you?
