and have a comfortable bed, and his mind may be so proud. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

He may wear fine jewelry and clothes,

sleep on a comfortable bed, and carry a proud mind.

The danger of comfort isn't the comfort — it's the quiet pride it grows.
The deeper layer

This one says the danger of comfort is the pride it quietly grows.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. It lists nice things: earrings, fine clothes, a soft bed. Then it says what they can grow inside: man garablee-aa, a proud mind.

The problem is not the comfort. It is the pride. Think of a kid with the newest sneakers who starts looking down on others. The sneakers are fine. The looking down is the trouble.

Ease can quietly puff up the ego, the part of us that thinks only of "me."

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how having more can quietly make a person prouder?
