Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 146
Verse 1 of 5

Youth Feels Alive, Yet Ends in Dust Without the Deeper

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 5.
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਪਾਵਤੁ ਰਲੀਆ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਬਲੀਆ ॥
paavat ralee-aa joban balee-aa.
The mortal revels in joy, in the vigor of youth;
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਾਟੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਲੀਆ ॥੧॥
naam binaa maatee sang ralee-aa. ||1||
but without the Name, he mingles with dust. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A person revels in the vigor of youth —

but without the Name, he ends up mingled with the dust.

The vigor of youth feels so alive — yet without something deeper, it ends in dust.
The deeper layer

This one says that youth feels strong, but without the Name it ends in dust.

paavat ralee-aa joban balee-aa — a person has fun in the strength of youth. That strength is real, and fun is good. But naam binaa maatee sang ralee-aa — without the Name, it all mixes into dust.

The verse does not say fun is bad. It says fun alone has nothing lasting inside it. Think of a sandcastle on a sunny day. It is great fun to build. But the tide will come (see also Shabad 102).

A Question to Sit With

What feels most full of life now that you know won't last on its own?
