Verse 5 of 6

Grace Brings the Mind Under Control

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
parabh kirpaa tay man vas aa-i-aa.
By God's Grace, the mind is brought under control;
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
naanak gurmukh taree tin maa-i-aa. ||4||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh crosses over the ocean of Maya. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By God's grace, the mind comes under control.

And so, says Nanak, the one who faces the Guru crosses the ocean of illusion.

By grace the mind comes under control, and the Gurmukh crosses the ocean of Maya.
The deeper layer

The turn comes from grace, not from trying harder.

The shabad has named the traps: showy pilgrimage, learning caught by Maya (the pull of the world), endless scorekeeping, worry, and pride. Now it says, "By God's Grace, the mind is brought under control."

Think of a wobbly bike with a grown-up's steady hand on the seat. You still pedal, but the balance is given to you. Then the Gurmukh, the one who faces the Guru, "crosses over the ocean of Maya." The whole wide sea of the world's pull is crossed with that help.

A Question to Sit With

What in you has only settled when you stopped forcing it?
