The Name Lifts an Unknown Soul Into Honor

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 5.
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਜਿਸੁ ਨੀਚ ਕਉ ਕੋਈ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
jis neech ka-o ko-ee na jaanai.
That wretched being, whom no one knows
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਉਹੁ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੧॥
naam japat uho chahu kunt maanai. ||1||
- chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he is honored in the four directions. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The lowly soul whom no one even knows —

by chanting the Name, is honored everywhere.

The Name can lift a soul no one had even heard of into honor everywhere.
The deeper layer

This one says the Name lifts up someone no one knows and gives them honor.

The verse begins with someone nobody knows or notices. Naam japat uho chahu kunt maanai — by repeating the Name, that person is honored in all four directions, which means everywhere. The Naam, or Name, means remembering the One with love.

Worth does not come from the world. It comes from the Name. Think of a quiet kid in class whom nobody notices. Then one day they help someone in trouble, and suddenly the whole school knows their kindness.

Shabad 135 tells the same story, where the one pushed aside is made noble.

A Question to Sit With

Have you seen someone overlooked by the world become deeply respected?
