Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The jewel of this life has become fruitful.

Says Nanak: God has shown me mercy.

A life that bears its fruit is, in the end, a mercy.
The deeper layer

This one says a life that grows good fruit is a gift of kindness.

Ratan janam ih safal bha-i-aa — the jewel of this life has become fruitful. A human life is precious, like a jewel. Here it has finally grown its fruit.

And Nanak says who did it. Kaho naanak prabh karee ma-i-aa — the One has shown me kindness. Ma-i-aa means mercy or loving kindness.

A good, fruitful life is grace at work. It is not a trophy we win by ourselves. Think of a garden. You can water it, but the sun, the rain and the seed's own life are gifts. The fruit is mostly a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean for your life to 'bear fruit' in the way that matters most?
