Bring Only Honesty and Rest the Weight on the One

ਮੈ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
mai nirgun gun naahee ko-ay.
I am worthless; I have no virtue at all.
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karan karaavanhaar parabh so-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God is the Creator, the Cause of all causes. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am worthless; I have no virtue at all.

You, God, are the Maker, the cause of all causes.

Bring nothing to lean on but honesty, and let the whole weight rest on the One.
The deeper layer

This one says: I bring nothing of my own, and the One does everything.

This is the rahaa-o line, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole song. Mai nirgun gun naahee ko-ay — I have no good qualities at all. That sounds harsh. But it is not someone hating himself. It is honest emptying out, so that the whole weight can rest on the One.

The One is karan karaavanhaar — the One who does, and the One who makes everything happen.

Think of a small child "helping" to bake a cake. The child cracks an egg and feels proud. But the grown-up planned it, bought everything, and runs the oven. The child is still loved. The child simply knows who is really making the cake.

A Question to Sit With

What feels lighter when you stop trying to prove your own worth?
