You Needn't Be Clever, Just Hold the Name

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 5.
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
ukat si-aanap kichhoo na jaanaa.
I know nothing of arguments or cleverness.
ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
din rain tayraa naam vakhaanaa. ||1||
Day and night, I chant Your Name. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I know nothing of arguments or cleverness.

Day and night, I simply chant Your Name.

You don't need to be clever or win arguments — just to hold the Name, simply, day and night.
The deeper layer

This one says you do not need to be clever to be close to the One.

Guru Arjan starts very honestly. Ukat si-aanap kichhoo na jaanaa — I know nothing of clever arguments or smart tricks. Other people debate and plan. He does just one simple thing. Din rain tayraa naam vakhaanaa — day and night, I say Your Name.

Think of a small child who cannot win any argument, but runs to a parent's arms every time. That simple trust is the whole posture here. Guru Arjan says the same thing in other songs too: simple love beats cleverness.

A Question to Sit With

What simple practice serves you better than all your cleverness?
