Even Heaven Is a Stop in the Turning Wheel

ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
tarihu gun meh vartai sansaaraa.
The world is under the influence of the three qualities.
ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਅਉਤਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
narak surag fir fir a-utaaraa. ||3||
The mortal is reincarnated, again and again, into heaven and hell. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The world turns under the three qualities;

the soul cycles, again and again, through its heavens and its hells.

Even the heavens of the world are just stops in a turning wheel — freedom is stepping beyond it.
The deeper layer

Even heaven, in this picture, is just one stop on a turning wheel.

The world runs under trai gun, the three qualities. They are three moods that color everything: lazy and dull, restless and pushy, and calm and good. Inside them, the soul keeps going around and around. Sometimes it lands in a heaven. Sometimes it lands in a hell.

Think of a merry-go-round. Some horses are painted gold, and some are plain. But all of them just go in circles. A gold horse is still on the ride. So being free does not mean getting a better seat on the wheel. It means stepping off the wheel, beyond the three qualities, to the One.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to want more than just a better turn of the same wheel?
