Says Nanak: the one who holds fast to the Name becomes worthy,
and his life bears fruit.
A life held close to the Name is a life that bears fruit.
Kaho naanak jo laa-i-aa naam — Nanak says, the one who holds on to the Name. Safal janam taa kaa parvaan — that life bears fruit and is accepted. The Name means the One's presence, remembered and loved.
Look back over this shabad. There was grief put on for show. There were sad and happy houses side by side. There were years that slipped away, and a wheel that kept turning. Against all of it stands one thing. Think of a garden. Many plants look busy, but only the ones with deep roots give fruit. A life rooted in the Name is like that. Another shabad in Raag Aasaa calls such a life a jewel made fruitful.
What would make you feel, at the end, that your life had truly borne fruit?
