Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I long for the Lotus Feet of my Beloved;

and the wretched messenger of death has fled from me.

Long deeply enough for the One, and even death turns and runs from you.
The deeper layer

This one says that when you love the One deeply, the fear of death runs away.

Charan kamal kee aas pi-aaray — I long for the lotus feet of my Beloved. The lotus is a beautiful flower that grows clean out of muddy water. "Lotus feet" is a loving way to speak of the One's presence.

Jamkankar nas ga-ay vichaaray — the messenger of death has run away. The heart that longs for the One is rooted in the One, who never dies. So death has nothing left to take. It does not lose a fight. It simply finds no hold and leaves.

Think of a shadow. When you turn toward the sun, the shadow falls behind you. It cannot stand in front of the light.

A Question to Sit With

What fear might simply flee if you were rooted in something it can't touch?
