Verse 4 of 5

You Can Rest Peacefully in the Thirst Itself

ਦਰਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
daras tayray kee pi-aas man laagee.
My mind thirsts for Your Vision;
ਸਹਜ ਅਨੰਦ ਬਸੈ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥੩॥
sahj anand basai bairaagee. ||3||
in peaceful ease and bliss, I dwell in detachment. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind thirsts for the sight of You;

and in peaceful ease and bliss, I dwell, detached.

You can thirst deeply for something and still rest peacefully in the thirst itself.
The deeper layer

This one says you can feel peaceful even while you are still longing.

Two things are held together here. Daras tayray kee pi-aas man laagee — my mind is thirsty to see You. And sahj anand basai bairaagee — I live in calm and joy, not clinging to anything.

Sahaj means a deep, easy calm. Bairaagee means someone who does not cling.

The longing does not make the heart restless. The heart rests right inside the longing. Think of the night before your birthday. You can hardly wait, and yet you fall asleep smiling. Wanting and peace live together.

A Question to Sit With

Can you hold a deep longing and a deep peace at the same time?
