Pray for the Name in Your Heart; All Else Follows

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ॥
naanak kee ardaas suneejai.
Hear this prayer of Nanak:
ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੇ ਮਹਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥੨੬॥੭੭॥
kayval naam riday meh deejai. ||4||26||77||
please, infuse Your Name into his heart. ||4||26||77||

In plain words

Hear this prayer of Nanak:

please pour Your Name into his heart.

The one thing worth praying for is the Name poured into your heart — everything else follows.
The deeper layer

This one says to pray for the Name in your heart, because everything else follows from it.

The shabad closes with the simplest prayer. Kayval naam riday meh deejai — please pour just Your Name into my heart. Kayval means "only."

The earlier lines spoke of death running away and sickness fading. But at the end, Nanak asks for only one thing: the Name, poured in. Everything else comes from that one gift.

Think of a plant. You don't have to paint its leaves green or tie on its flowers. You just give it water, and the rest grows by itself.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing to be placed in your heart, what would it be?
