Verse 4 of 5

When the Inner Fire Goes Out, Peace Remains

ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਕੀਨੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
thaakur apunai keenee daat.
My Master has given me a gift;
ਜਲਨਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਂਤਿ ॥੩॥
jalan bujhee man ho-ee saaNt. ||3||
the fire has been extinguished, and my mind is now at peace. ||3||

In plain words

My Master has given me a gift:

the fire has been put out, and my mind is now at peace.

When the inner fire is finally put out, what remains is peace.
The deeper layer

This one is about a fire going out inside and peace taking its place.

Thaakur apunai keenee daat — my Master gave me a gift.

The gift is this: jalan bujhee man ho-ee saaNt — the burning has stopped, and my mind is at peace. The fire here is the burn of wanting and restlessness. An earlier shabad called it a fever.

Think of a fever breaking. You don't force it down. It lifts, and you feel cool and calm again. This fire was put out by a gift, not by force.

A Question to Sit With

What 'fire' in you would you most want put out for good?
