Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 170
Verse 4 of 5

The Powers People Chase Serve the Humble Devotee

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦਸ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਾਈ ॥
jaa kee sayvaa das asat siDhaa-ee.
One who is served by the eighteen supernatural powers of the Siddhas
ਪਲਕ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਲਾਗਹੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥
palak disat taa kee laagahu paa-ee. ||3||
- grasp his feet, even for an instant. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one whom even the eighteen great powers wait upon —

grasp his feet, if only for an instant.

Even the powers people chase serve the humble devotee — so honor him, don't chase them.
The deeper layer

Even "the eighteen supernatural powers of the Siddhas" serve the true devotee — the powers people chase attend the one whose Master is the Unfathomable. So the wise move is not to seek the powers but to "grasp his feet, even for an instant" — to honor the devotee whom the powers themselves attend (cf. Shabad 156).

A Question to Sit With

Why might it be wiser to seek good company than to chase impressive powers?
