In plain words

Night and day, the mouse of time gnaws away at the rope of your life.

Fallen into the well, the mortal keeps licking the sweet treats of illusion.

Time is quietly gnawing through the rope of your life while you lick at sweets in the well.
The deeper layer

This one is a famous story about how time slips away.

Picture a person hanging by a rope over a deep well. A mouse is chewing the rope, night and day. The mouse is time. But the person does not notice. He is busy licking the sweets of Maya, the pleasures of the world.

Think of someone playing a game on a phone while the battery drains to zero. The fun keeps them from seeing it.

Time is quietly eating our days while we are distracted. We never notice the rope getting thinner.

A Question to Sit With

What 'sweets' distract you from noticing how fast time is passing?
