Your Very Life Is Not Yours but a Gift

ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਮਾਰਨਵਾਰਾ ॥
avar na ko-oo maaranvaaraa.
There is no other Destroyer than Him.
ਜੀਅਉ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਦੇਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jee-a-o hamaaraa jee-o daynhaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is my very life, the Giver of life. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

There is no destroyer other than Him.

He is my very life, the Giver of life.

Your very life is not your own possession but a gift from the only source there is.
The deeper layer

This one says your very life is not something you own. It is a gift from the Giver of life.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Avar na ko-oo maaranvaaraa means "there is no other who can destroy." No other power can undo what the One holds up.

Jee-a-o hamaaraa jee-o daynhaaraa means "my life is the Giver of life." The One is not only the source of my life. The One is my life.

Think of a lamp plugged into the wall. The light is real and bright. But it comes from the power flowing through the cord. The soul's life flows the same way, from the only Source there is. That is why the speaker feels so safe.

A Question to Sit With

What changes if you see your life as a gift rather than a possession?
