The Soul Joined to the One Simply Shares Its Nature

ਨਾ ਉਸੁ ਬੰਧਨ ਨਾ ਹਮ ਬਾਧੇ ॥
naa us banDhan naa ham baaDhay.
He is not bound, so I am not in bondage.
ਨਾ ਉਸੁ ਧੰਧਾ ਨਾ ਹਮ ਧਾਧੇ ॥
naa us DhanDhaa naa ham DhaaDhay.
He has no occupation, so I have no entanglements.
ਨਾ ਉਸੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਮੈਲਾ ॥
naa us mail na ham ka-o mailaa.
He has no impurities, so I have no impurities.
ਓਸੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਤ ਹਮ ਸਦ ਕੇਲਾ ॥੨॥
os anand ta ham sad kaylaa. ||2||
He is in ecstasy, so I am always happy. ||2||

In plain words

He is not bound, so I am not in bondage. He has no tangled affairs, so I have no entanglements.

He has no impurity, so neither do I. He is in ecstasy, so I am always happy.

The soul joined to the One doesn't achieve freedom and joy separately — it simply shares in the One's nature.
The deeper layer

This one says a soul joined to the One simply shares in the One's nature.

The pattern from the start of the shabad keeps going. Naa us bandhan naa ham baadhay means "He is not tied down, so I am not tied down." He has no tangled business, so I have no tangles. Naa us mail means "He has no dirt," so I am clean too. Os anand ta ham sad kaylaa means "He is in joy, so I am always happy."

The soul does not have to earn each of these one by one, like badges. It shares them because it is joined to the One.

Think of a drop of water in the ocean. It does not have to work to be salty or to move with the waves. Being part of the ocean, it simply shares what the ocean is. The One's freedom, cleanness, and joy become the soul's own.

A Question to Sit With

What would it be like to catch the qualities of something simply by being one with it?
