Offer Even Your Good Deeds; Don't Hoard Them

ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਦੇਵਉ ਸਭ ਨੇਮਾ ॥
jaap taap dayva-o sabh naymaa.
I dedicate all to Him - chanting and meditation, austerity and religious observances.
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਅਰਪਉ ਸਭ ਹੋਮਾ ॥
karam Dharam arpa-o sabh homaa.
I offer all to Him - good actions, righteous conduct and incense burning.
ਗਰਬੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਹੋਵਉ ਰੇਨ ॥
garab moh taj hova-o rayn.
Renouncing pride and attachment, I become the dust of the feet of the Saints.
ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੇਖਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨੈਨ ॥੩॥
unH kai sang daykh-a-u parabh nain. ||3||
In their society, I behold God with my eyes. ||3||

In plain words

I offer Him all my chanting and meditation, my discipline and my holy habits. I lay before Him my good deeds and my honest living.

I let go of pride and clinging. I become the dust of the Saints' feet. And in their company, I see God with my own eyes.

Offer up even your good deeds — don't hoard them as credit — and you'll see God in good company.
The deeper layer

This one says: offer even your good deeds to the One instead of keeping score.

Guru Arjan hands over all his spiritual practice. Jaap is repeating prayer. Taap is hard discipline. He adds his good deeds, his right living, and the incense of worship. He lays it all before the One. He does not keep any of it as points for himself.

Then he lets go of garab, pride, and moh, the clinging feeling. He becomes like the dust under the feet of the saints. And in their company, he sees God with his own eyes.

Think of a team that wins a match. A proud player says, "I scored!" A good teammate says, "We did it." Offering up your good work, instead of counting it, is itself the practice.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing could you do without keeping score of it?
