Verse 5 of 5

Even Your Love for the One Is, in the End, a Grace

aaphu ko-ee milai na bhoolai.
By himself, no one is united, and no one goes astray.
jis kirpaal tis saaDhsang ghoolai.
One who is blessed by God's Mercy, joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
kaho naanak tayrai kurbaan.
Says Nanak, I am a sacrifice to You.
sant ot parabh tayraa taan. ||4||34||85||
O God, You are the Support and the Strength of the Saints. ||4||34||85||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

On his own, no one is united, and no one strays; whoever is blessed by mercy joins the company of the holy.

Says Nanak: I am a sacrifice to You — You are the support and strength of the Saints.

Even your love for the One is, in the end, a grace — you don't unite by yourself.
The deeper layer

The close keeps even love from being a self-made achievement: "by himself, no one is united, and no one goes astray." Both the meeting and the straying are within the One's order; the blessed are brought to the Sangat by mercy. Even the love the whole shabad praises is, finally, grace.

A Question to Sit With

What love in you feels less like a choice and more like a gift?
