The Tyrant's Pleasures Were a Passing Dream

ਜਿਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਹਾ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਬਿਨਾਹਾ ॥
jineh upaahaa tineh binaahaa.
The One who created him destroys him.
ਰੰਗ ਰਸਾ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੁਪਨਾਹਾ ॥
rang rasaa jaisay supnaahaa.
Enjoyments and pleasures are like just a dream.
ਸੋਈ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥

He alone is liberated, and possesses regal power and wealth,
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਜਿਸੁ ਖਸਮੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥੪॥੩੫॥੮੬॥
naanak daas jis khasam da-i-aal. ||4||35||86||
O Nanak, whom the Lord Master blesses with His Mercy. ||4||35||86||

In plain words

The One who made him unmakes him; all his pleasures were only a dream.

Only that one is truly free, truly powerful and rich, says Nanak, whom the Master blesses with mercy.

The tyrant's pleasures were a passing dream — real power belongs to the one blessed by mercy.
The deeper layer

All the tyrant's pleasures were only a dream. The real riches belong to those the One blesses.

Jineh upaahaa tineh binaahaa — the One who made him also unmakes him. Rang rasaa jaisay supnaahaa — all the fun and pleasures were just like a dream. A shabad in Raag Gauree pictures a beggar who dreams he is a king. He wakes up still a beggar. Think of waking from a dream where you won a huge prize, and finding your hands empty.

So who is really free and truly rich? The one the Master blesses with mercy, says Nanak. Real power does not come from being feared. It comes from being blessed by the One.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between power people fear and a richness that's truly secure?
