The Robbers' Road Runs Far From the Saints' Path

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਪੰਚਪਦਾ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 5 panchpadaa.
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl, Panch-Pada:
ਜਿਹ ਪੈਡੈ ਲੂਟੀ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
jih paidai lootee panihaaree.
That highway, upon which the water-carrier is plundered
ਸੋ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸੰਤਨ ਦੂਰਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
so maarag santan dooraaree. ||1||
- that way is far removed from the Saints. ||1||

In plain words

The highway where travelers are robbed —

that road runs far from the Saints.

The road where travelers get robbed runs far from the path the Saints walk.
The deeper layer

This shabad pictures life as a journey. There is a dangerous road, and there is a safe one.

On the dangerous road, travelers get robbed. Jih paidai lootee panihaaree — on that highway, the water-carrier is robbed of what she carries. Think of someone walking home with everything they own in one bag, down a street where thieves wait. The things that rob ordinary people lie along that road.

So maarag santan dooraaree — that road is far from the Saints. The Saints walk a different road, a safe one. The dangers that strip other travelers are simply not on their path. That is the Saints' protection.

A Question to Sit With

What 'dangerous road' do you most want to keep your distance from?
