Verse 3 of 4

We So Easily Forget the One Who Gave Us Everything

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੀਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
jin sabh kichh dee-aa tis chitvat naahi.
The mortals do not remember the One, who has given them everything.
ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
mahaa bikhi-aa meh din rain jaahi. ||3||
Engrossed in such terrible corruption, their days and nights waste away. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People do not remember the One who has given them everything;

lost in wrong things, their days and nights drain away.

We so easily forget the One who gave us everything we have.
The deeper layer

We so easily forget the One who gave us everything.

Jin sabh kichh dee-aa tis chitvat naahi — people do not remember the One who gave them all they have. Our body, our breath, our life all come from the One. Mahaa bikhi-aa meh din rain jaahi — lost in poison-like things, their days and nights slip away. Bikhi-aa means poison, the pull of greed and wrong wants.

Think of getting a wonderful birthday present and never saying thank you. Forgetting the Giver is the biggest kind of forgetting to say thank you.

A Question to Sit With

How often do you remember the source of all you've been given?
