The One Guards What It Gives

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 5.
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਹਾਥ ॥
gur pooray raakhi-aa day haath.
Giving His Hand, the Perfect Guru has protected the child.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਭਇਆ ਜਨ ਕਾ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੧॥
pargat bha-i-aa jan kaa partaap. ||1||
The glory of His servant has become manifest. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Giving His hand, the perfect Guru has protected the child.

The glory of His servant has shone forth.

The One guards what it gives — its protecting hand over the child.
The deeper layer

This one says the One protects what He gives.

This song follows the joy of a baby's birth in the Guru's family. Gur pooray raakhi-aa day haath — the perfect Guru held out His hand and kept the child safe.

Then: pargat bha-i-aa jan kaa partaap. The glory of His servant became plain for all to see. A life held by the One becomes a living sign of His kindness.

Think of a parent holding a toddler's hand while crossing a busy street. The child is safe because the hand holds on. Here the Guru's hand is over the child. What the One gives, the One also guards.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to know something precious is being watched over?
