In plain words

I think of the Guru, the Guru; I meditate on the Guru, the Guru.

I offer my heartfelt prayer to the Guru, and it is answered. I have come for shelter to the true Guru, and the service of His servant is fulfilled.

A heartfelt prayer doesn't return empty.
The deeper layer

This one says a prayer from the heart does not come back empty.

Gur gur japee guroo gur Dhi-aa-ee — I repeat "Guru, Guru," I think of the Guru, the Guru. Saying it twice shows the whole heart is turned in one direction, with love.

The next line is the rahaa-o line, the "pause" line, the center of the song. Jee-a kee ardaas — the prayer of my heart — I brought to the Guru, and it was answered. Then the singer came for shelter to the true Guru, and the service of the servant was fulfilled.

Think of calling out "Mom!" from the next room when you really need her. It is not a fancy speech. But she hears the need in your voice and comes. When the heart's prayer is real, it is heard.

A Question to Sit With

What is a prayer of the heart that was answered in your life?
