Verse 3 of 5

Praise Is the Wealth That Lasts Forever

ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ਕਾਜਿ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ਗਨੋੁ ॥
raaj maal janjaal kaaj na kitai gano.
Royal powers, wealth, and worldly involvements are of no use at all.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਹੁ ਧਨੋੁ ॥੨॥
har keertan aaDhaar nihchal ayhu Dhano. ||2||
The Kirtan of the Lord's Praise is my Support; this wealth is everlasting. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Royal power, wealth, and worldly involvements are of no use at all.

The praise of the One is my support — this wealth is everlasting.

Worldly riches are of no real use — the wealth of praise is the kind that lasts forever.
The deeper layer

The contrast of two wealths: "royal powers, wealth, and worldly involvements are of no use," while "the Kirtan of the Lord's Praise is my Support; this wealth is everlasting." Worldly riches pass; the wealth of praise endures. Choose the wealth that lasts (cf. Shabad 109).

A Question to Sit With

What 'wealth' in your life will still be wealth a hundred years from now?
