Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 210
Verse 3 of 5

The Mind of Mine and Yours Is Its Own Noose

ਮੇਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਾਨਤਾ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਬੰਧਾ ॥
mayraa tayraa jaantaa tab hee tay banDhaa.
He is concerned with 'mine and yours', and so he is held in bondage.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਾਟੀ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਤਬ ਛੁਟਕੇ ਫੰਧਾ ॥੨॥
gur kaatee agi-aantaa tab chhutkay fanDhaa. ||2||
When the Guru dispelled my ignorance, then the noose of death was cut away from my neck. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Caught up in 'mine and yours,' a person is held in bondage.

When the Guru dispelled my ignorance, the noose of death was cut from my neck.

The dividing mind of 'mine and yours' is itself a noose — understanding cuts it.
The deeper layer

The bondage is "mine and yours" — the dividing, possessive mind. Ignorance dispelled, "the noose of death was cut." The grip of possessiveness and the grip of death loosen together, both undone by understanding (cf. Shabad 141, the subtle bonds).

A Question to Sit With

Where does 'mine and yours' tie you down?
