Escape and Treasure Are Both Gifts of Mercy

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

Birth and death are overcome, and one does not have to suffer in the City of Death.

naam niDhaan so-ee paa-ay kirpaa karay parabh so-ay. ||3||
He alone obtains the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, unto whom God shows His Mercy. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Birth and death are overcome, and one does not suffer in the City of Death.

He alone obtains the treasure of the Name, on whom God shows His Mercy.

Escaping the cycle and gaining the treasure are both gifts of mercy, not achievements.
The deeper layer

Remembrance "overcomes birth and death" — the cycle and its sufferings — and the treasure of the Name comes only "unto whom God shows His Mercy." The escape from the cycle and the treasure are both gifts of grace, not achievements.
