Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 234
Verse 3 of 4

Neither Riches nor Power Rival the One Love

ਰਾਜ ਨ ਭਾਗ ਨ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਸਾਦਨ ॥
raaj na bhaag na hukam na saadan.
Imperial power, fortunes, royal command and mansions
ਕਿਛੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਚਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
kichh kichh na chaahee. ||2||
- I have no desire for these. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Imperial power, fortunes, royal command, and mansions —

I have no desire for these.

Neither riches nor power can compete with the one love the soul truly seeks.
The deeper layer

The second renunciation: power — "imperial power, fortunes, royal command and mansions" — also set aside, "I have no desire for these." Neither riches nor rule can compete with the one love the soul seeks. Both the merchant's gold and the king's crown are declined (cf. Shabad 177).

A Question to Sit With

Would power or wealth tempt you if you already had what mattered most?
