Verse 2 of 4

First the Ego Goes, Then Service Flows

ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਗੁਨ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਗਾਵੇ ॥੧॥
aap gavaa-i-aa sayv kamaa-i-aa gun ras ras gaavay. ||1||
They eradicate their self-conceit and serve the Lord; drenched in His Love, they sing His Glorious Praises. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

They eradicate their self-conceit and serve;

drenched in His Love, they sing His praises.

First the ego goes, then service flows, and the soul sings drenched in love.
The deeper layer

The Saints' way in one line: "they eradicate their self-conceit and serve." First the ego goes (haumai), then service flows, and "drenched in His Love, they sing." Humility, service, and love-soaked praise — the whole shape of a holy life.

A Question to Sit With

What would have to quiet in you for genuine service to flow?
