What Makes Anything Holy Is the Love Behind It

poojaa keechai naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai bin naavai pooj na ho-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Perform worship and adoration by meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; without the Name, there is no worship and adoration. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Real worship is simply remembering the One with love.

Without that, all the outer worship in the world isn't truly worship at all.

What makes anything holy is the love and remembrance behind it — not the outer form.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the shabad. It says the Name is the heart of all worship.

Poojaa keechai naam dhi-aa-ee-ai — worship by keeping the Name, the Naam, in mind. Bin naavai pooj na ho-ay — without the Name, there is no worship.

Offerings, ceremonies and special words all have a place. But on their own they are not the real thing. The real thing is loving remembrance of the One. Without that living love at the center, even the grandest worship is only motions.

Think of a hug given while looking at your phone. The arms are there, but the hug is missing something. With love inside, even a tiny act becomes true worship.

This is Aasaa's steady teaching, said once more as it hands off to the next raag. What makes anything holy is the love and remembrance behind it. Love is what makes it real.

A Question to Sit With

Why does the love behind something matter more than the outer form of it?
