A Human Heart, Made for Love, Can Give So Much More

ਪਸੂ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਖੜੁ ਖਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਦੇਹਿ ॥
pasoo mileh chang-aa-ee-aa kharh khaaveh amrit deh.
Even beasts have value, as they eat grass and give milk.
ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਹਿ ॥੩॥
naam vihoonay aadmee Dharig jeevan karam karayhi. ||3||
Without the Naam, the mortal's life is cursed, as are the actions he performs. ||3||

In plain words

Even ordinary animals give something valuable — grazing on grass, they give us nourishing milk.

So a human life spent without love and goodness would be a sad waste of something meant for so much more.

Even a cow gives nourishing milk — so a human heart, made for love and goodness, can give so much more. Don't waste the gift.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak points at a cow and asks: if a cow gives so much, how much more can you give?

Pasoo mileh chang-aa-ee-aa — even animals have value. They eat grass and give milk. A simple cow gives something good and nourishing to the world.

A human being has so much more. We can choose, love and understand. To live without the Name, without love and goodness, would waste a life made for so much more. It would give less than a grazing cow.

This is not a harsh judgment. It is a challenge and an encouragement. Think of a gifted musician who never plays a note. What a waste of the gift!

Even a cow makes the world a little better with its milk. You, with your wonderful human heart, can give kindness, help, love and joy. Do not waste the gift. Give.

A Question to Sit With

If even a cow gives something good to the world, what good could you give with your human heart?
