Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Says Nanak: one who meets the true Guru

becomes permanent and immortal.

Meeting the Guru, the soul becomes permanent amid all that passes.
The deeper layer

Meeting the Guru gives the soul something that never passes away.

Kaho naanak jis satgur bhayti-aa so jan nihchal thee-aa — says Nanak, whoever meets the True Guru becomes nihchal. Nihchal means steady and unshakable, lasting forever.

At the start of this shabad, forgetting the One was a kind of death while still alive. Here is the other side. The soul that joins with the One becomes permanent. Think of a sandcastle next to a mountain. The waves wash the sandcastle away, but the mountain stays. Everything around us changes. The soul held in the One stays.

A Question to Sit With

What in you feels permanent, even as everything else changes?
