Please, come to me, O Beloved Lord; without You, no one can comfort me. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Please come to me, O Beloved;

without You, no one can comfort me.

When you long for the One, no lesser comfort will quite reach you.
The deeper layer

When you miss the One, nothing else can comfort you.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Mil raam pi-aaray — come and meet me, dear Beloved. Tum bin Dheeraj ko na karai — without You, no one can calm me.

This is a cry of viraha, the ache of missing someone you love. Think of a small child at a sleepover who suddenly misses home. Friends offer toys and snacks, and it helps a little. But only one thing will really do: seeing Mom or Dad walk in. Another shabad in Raag Aasaa sings this same longing. The soul that longs for the One needs only the Beloved's coming.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a longing in you that only one thing could satisfy?
