Last-Minute Payments Can't Cover a Life's Neglect

ਡਾਨੁ ਸਗਲ ਗੈਰ ਵਜਹਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਦੀਵਾਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਨ ਪਰਿਆ ॥
daan sagal gair vajeh bhari-aa deevaan laykhai na pari-aa.
He paid the fine, but it is in vain - in the Court of the Lord, his account is not credited.
ਜੇਂਹ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਰਹੈ ਓਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਸੋਇ ਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਿਆ ॥੩॥

Those deeds which would have covered him - those deeds, he has not done. ||3||

In plain words

He paid the fine, but in vain — in the Court, his account is not credited.

The deeds that would have covered him, those deeds he has not done.

Last-minute payments can't make up for a lifetime's neglected account.
The deeper layer

This one says a last-minute payment cannot make up for a whole life of not caring.

The picture is of someone trying to pay at the very end. Daan sagal gair vajeh bhari-aa — he paid, but it was no use. Deevaan laykhai na pari-aa — in the One's court, it was not counted.

Why? JayNh kaaraj rahai olHaa so-ay kaam na kari-aa — the good deeds that would have covered him were never done.

Think of never practicing the piano all year, then practicing all night before the recital. One night cannot replace a year of practice. A good life is built day by day, a little at a time.

A Question to Sit With

What 'account' are you building now, while there is still time?
