listen to the call. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my stranger soul,

listen to the call.

You are a stranger here, a traveler passing through — listen for the call homeward.
The deeper layer

You are a traveler here, so keep listening for the call home.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. O-ay pardaysee-aa — O stranger, O traveler from another land. Pardaysee means someone far from home. That is what the soul is called here.

The soul is passing through this world like a visitor. It is invited to listen for the call to come home. Think of a child at a sleepover. They have fun, but they know a parent will call when it's time to go. So they keep an ear open. Another shabad in this raag uses the same picture.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you lived as a traveler here rather than a permanent resident?
