Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whatever you are attached to, you shall have to leave it all behind.

These things seem like only a dream, to the one who takes the Lord's Name.

Everything you cling to you'll leave behind — and to the awake soul, it already seems a dream.
The deeper layer

Everything you hold on to here, you will one day leave behind.

That is the traveler's truth. Sabh ka-o taj ga-ay — they left it all behind. Whatever we get attached to, we can't take with us.

To someone who holds the Name, those things are supnaa ji-o — like a dream. They are seen for what they are: only half-real, gone when you wake up. Think of a great dream about winning a trophy. In the morning, your hands are empty. Another shabad compares such things to mirages, water that shimmers in the desert but isn't there.

A Question to Sit With

What do you cling to that you'll one day have to leave?
