Verse 4 of 9

We Become Whatever We Soak Ourselves In

ਸਚੁ ਮਨ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਤੁ ਬਿਲੋਵੈ ॥
sach man kaaran tat bilovai.
For the benefit of the mind, churn the true essence of reality;
ਸੁਭਰ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
subhar sarvar mail na Dhovai.
bathing in the over-flowing tank of nectar, filth is washed away.
ਜੈ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਤਾ ਤੈਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
jai si-o raataa taiso hovai.
We become like the One with whom we are imbued.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੩॥
aapay kartaa karay so hovai. ||3||
Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||3||

In plain words

For your mind's sake, churn the true essence of reality; bathe in the overflowing pool of nectar, and your filth is washed away.

We become like the One we are soaked in. Whatever the Creator does comes to pass.

We become like whatever we soak ourselves in — so steep yourself in the One.
The deeper layer

We become like whatever we soak ourselves in.

Jai si-o raataa taiso hovai — we become like the One we are dyed in. Think of a white T-shirt dropped into blue dye. Leave it long enough and it is blue all the way through. Another shabad speaks of the same thing: the soul takes on the One's own color.

The verse also says to churn the true essence for your mind's sake, like churning milk for butter. Bathe in the overflowing pool of nectar, and the dirt of the mind washes away. That pool is inside you, not somewhere far.

Aapay kartaa karay so hovai — whatever the Creator does, happens. The rest is the One's doing.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what are you steeping yourself in, and what are you becoming like?
