In plain words

The Guru is cool as ice; He puts out the fire of the mind.

Smear yourself with the ashes of devoted service, live in the home of peace — make this your holy order; let the spotless Word be the flute you play.

Your ashes are humble service, your monastery the home of peace, your flute the Word itself.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak takes the yogi's tools one by one and gives each a new, inner meaning.

First, the Guru is cool like ice. Picture holding an ice pack on a hot, sore spot. The Guru cools the fire of an upset, grabbing mind the same way.

Some yogis rubbed ashes on their bodies to show they had left the world. Here the ashes are sayvaa, loving service to others. Yogis joined an order, a group with its own way of life. Here the order is living in the home of peace, sahj, a calm and easy mind. Yogis played a flute. Here the music is nirmal banee, the spotless Word of the Guru.

A Question to Sit With

What outer symbol of devotion could become an inner reality for you?
