Verse 5 of 9

Public Performance Never Frees the Inside

ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
baahrahu ha-umai kahai kahaa-ay.
One who speaks egotistically in public,
ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥
andrahu mukat layp kaday na laa-ay.
never attains liberation within.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
maa-i-aa moh gur sabad jalaa-ay.
One who burns away his attachment to Maya, by the Word of the Guru's Shabad,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੪॥
nirmal naam sad hirdai Dhi-aa-ay. ||4||
meditates forever within his heart on the Immaculate Naam. ||4||

In plain words

One who talks proudly in public never becomes free within.

But one who burns away clinging to illusion by the Guru's Word keeps the spotless Name in the heart forever.

Public performance never frees the inside — quiet inner work does.
The deeper layer

Showing off on the outside never makes you free on the inside.

This is the difference between show and what is real. Some people talk big in front of others, full of ha-umai, the "me, me, me" feeling. That kind of person never becomes free inside.

Someone else works quietly. Maa-i-aa moh gur sabad jalaa-ay — through the Guru's Word, they burn away their clinging to maa-i-aa, the pull of passing things. And they keep the spotless Name in their heart, always.

Think of a plant. Everyone sees the leaves. But what keeps it alive is the roots, working quietly under the soil. Inner work, not a public show, is what sets you free.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between looking liberated and being free within?
