Verse 6 of 9

Even the Company of a Steady Soul Is Grace

ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
Dhaavat raakhai thaak rahaa-ay.
He restrains his wandering mind, and keeps it under control.
ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
sikh sangat karam milaa-ay.
The company of such a Sikh is obtained only by Grace.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥
gur bin bhoolo aavai jaa-ay.
Without the Guru, he goes astray and continues coming and going.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੫॥
nadar karay sanjog milaa-ay. ||5||
Bestowing His Mercy, the Lord unites him in Union. ||5||

In plain words

He holds back his wandering mind and keeps it steady.

The company of such a Sikh comes only by grace.

Without the Guru, one goes astray and keeps coming and going.

Showing mercy, the Lord brings him into union.

Even the company of a steady soul is a gift of grace.
The deeper layer

A person with a calm, steady mind is rare, and even being near one is a gift.

Dhaavat raakhai thaak rahaa-ay — this person holds back the running mind and keeps it still. Think of a puppy that keeps dashing off, and someone gently calling it back to sit.

Sikh sangat karam milaa-ay — the company of such a Sikh comes only by karam, grace. So even good friends like that are a gift, not something we earn.

Without the Guru, a person loses the way and keeps coming and going, from one life to the next. Being joined with the One comes only through the One's kind look of mercy.

A Question to Sit With

Whose steady company has been a gift you didn't arrange?
