Both Pain and Pleasure Come by the Will

ਰੂੜੋ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
roorho kaha-o na kahi-aa jaa-ee.
I cannot describe the Beauteous Lord.
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਉ ਨਹ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
akath katha-o nah keemat paa-ee.
I speak the unspoken; I cannot estimate His value.
ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੂਖ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
sabh dukh tayray sookh rajaa-ee.
All pain and pleasure come by Your Will.
ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਈ ॥੬॥
sabh dukh maytay saachai naa-ee. ||6||
All pain is eradicated by the True Name. ||6||

In plain words

I cannot describe the Beauteous One; I speak the unspoken, unable to estimate His value.

All pain and pleasure come by Your Will; all pain is erased by the True Name.

Both pain and pleasure come by the Will — and the Name is what heals the pain.
The deeper layer

The One is too beautiful for words, and the True Name eases every pain.

Roorho kaha-o na kahi-aa jaa-ee — I cannot describe the Beautiful One. Guru Nanak tries anyway. He speaks what cannot be spoken, and still cannot measure the One's worth. Think of trying to describe a sunset to someone over the phone. Whatever you say, it is bigger.

Then he says both pain and pleasure come by the One's Will. That Will is Hukam, the flow of existence.

And yet there is a promise. Sabh dukh maytay saachai naa-ee — every pain is wiped away by the True Name. The Will brings both the sad days and the happy ones. And the Name heals the pain.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you bear pain that comes whether you chose it or not?
