Remembrance Releases the Bonds of Attachment

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi jag baaDhaa jamkaal.
Because of attachment to Maya, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death.
ਬਾਂਧਾ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥
baaNDhaa chhootai naam samHaal.
These bonds are released when one remembers the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
gur sukh-daata avar na bhaal.
The Guru is the Giver of peace; do not look for any other.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
halat palat nibhee tuDh naal. ||2||
In this world, and the next, He shall stand by you. ||2||

In plain words

Through attachment to illusion, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death;

these bonds are released when one remembers the Name. The Guru is the Giver of peace — look for no other; here and hereafter, He shall stand by you.

The bonds of attachment are released by remembrance — and the Guru stands by you here and hereafter.
The deeper layer

Remembering the Name loosens the ties that hold us.

Maa-i-aa mohi jag baadhaa jamkaal — because of clinging to Maya, the world is tied up by the Messenger of Death. Maya means the things that shine for a while and then fade. Holding on to them too tightly is like being tied with ropes.

Baandhaa chhootai naam samhaal — the ties come loose when you remember the Name.

The Guru is the sukh-daataa, the Giver of peace. So avar na bhaal, look for no other. Halat palat nibhee tudh naal — here and in the life to come, He will stand by you. Like a friend who never leaves your side, the Guru stays with you in both worlds.

A Question to Sit With

What bonds might loosen if you turned, even now, toward what is real?
