Verse 5 of 5

When Truly Given To, You Stop Shopping Around

ਆਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਬੇਚਾਰਾ ॥
aakhan vaalaa ki-aa baychaaraa.
What can the helpless speaker do?
ਸਿਫਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
siftee bharay tayray bhandaaraa.
Your bounties are overflowing with Your Praises.
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
jis tooN deh tisai ki-aa chaaraa.
And the one, unto whom You give - why should he think of any other?
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak sach savaaranhaaraa. ||4||1||
O Nanak, the True Lord is the Embellisher. ||4||1||

In plain words

What can a helpless little speaker like me do? Your gifts come pouring down, and Your praises pour with them.

And the one You decide to give to — why would he ever go looking anywhere else? Says Nanak: the True One is the One who makes everything beautiful.

When you are truly given to, you stop shopping around — there was only ever one door.
The deeper layer

When the One gives to you, you stop looking anywhere else.

Aakhan vaalaa ki-aa baychaaraa — what can a poor, small speaker do? This is not sad. It is a happy kind of giving up. The speaker is set free from an impossible job, measuring the One. Now he can simply receive.

Jis tooN deh tisai ki-aa chaaraa — the one You give to, why would he look elsewhere? Think of a kid who gets a hug from a parent after a hard day. They do not go around asking strangers for hugs. There is nowhere else to go, because every other door leads back to the same One. The last word is savaaranhaaraa, the One who makes beautiful. The One does not only give. The One makes the soul beautiful, like dressing someone for a celebration.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt so completely given enough that you stopped looking for more?
