You Rise to the Level of the Company You Keep

ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
ootam sangat ootam hovai.
In the uplifting society, one is uplifted.
ਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
gun ka-o Dhaavai avgan Dhovai.
He chases after virtue and washes off his sins.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੭॥
bin gur sayvay sahj na hovai. ||7||
Without serving the Guru, celestial poise is not obtained. ||7||

In plain words

In good company, a person is lifted up.

He chases after goodness and washes off his sins. Without serving the Guru, deep calm does not come.

You rise to the level of the company you keep — so keep uplifting company.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak is saying: you rise to the level of the company you keep.

Ootam sangat ootam hovai — in fine company, you become fine. This good company is the Sat Sangat, the gathering of good people who remember the One. It lifts up everyone who comes in. There, a person gun ka-o Dhaavai — runs toward goodness — and washes away what is wrong.

Think of a slow runner who joins a strong team and gets faster just by training beside them. But one more thing is needed: bin gur sayvay sahj na hovai — without serving the Guru, deep calm does not come. Sahj means that steady, peaceful calm.

A Question to Sit With

Whose company lifts you, and whose pulls you down?
