Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

He enjoys true pleasure and suffers no pain.

He tastes the ambrosial wisdom and the highest essence.

He overcomes the five passions and becomes the happiest of all.

Conquering the five passions isn't grim deprivation — it makes you the happiest of all.
The deeper layer

Winning over the five passions is the happiest way to live.

Saachaa harakh naahee tis sog — the Gurmukh has true joy, and sorrow does not touch them. They taste amrit gi-aan, wisdom as sweet as nectar, and mahaa ras, the highest sweetness. This is the Har Ras, the taste of the One.

Then comes the surprise. Panch samaa-ee sukhee sabh log — they overcome the five, and become the happiest of all. The five are the Panch Vikaar, the five passions: craving, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. You might think taming them would feel like going without. The verse says the opposite. Think of a kid who stops fighting with their brother over every toy. They have lost nothing. They have gained a happy home.

A Question to Sit With

What freedom might feel like happiness, not loss?
