Even Your Attachment to the One Is His Own Doing

When my God attaches someone to Him, only then is that person attached.

Conquering ego, he remains awake to the Word of the Shabad.

Here and hereafter, he enjoys lasting peace. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Only when God joins someone to Him is that person joined.

Conquering ego, he stays awake to the Word.

Here and hereafter, he enjoys lasting peace.

Even your attachment to the One is the One's own doing.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak says that even our love for the One starts with the One.

Mayraa parabh laa-ay taa ko laagai — only when my God joins someone to Him does that person hold on. We cannot glue ourselves to the One by our own effort. Grace does it.

Think of a magnet and a paper clip. The clip does not jump up by itself. The magnet pulls it close.

And then the ego, the me-first feeling, is beaten. The person stays awake to the Word. Here and hereafter, they have lasting peace.

A Question to Sit With

What good bond in your life feels less like your choice than a gift?
