Verse 3 of 10

The Mind Can't Rescue Itself; Grace Does

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹਸੀ ॥
ih man mugaDh kahhu ki-o rahsee.
Tell me, how can this stupid mind be rescued?
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਸੀ ॥
bin samjhay jam kaa dukh sahsee.
Without understanding, it shall suffer the pains of death.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੈ ॥
aapay bakhsay satgur maylai.
The Lord Himself forgives us, and unites us with the True Guru.
ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪੇਲੈ ॥੨॥
kaal kantak maaray sach paylai. ||2||
The True Lord conquers and overcomes the tortures of death. ||2||

In plain words

Tell me, how can this stupid mind be rescued? Without understanding, it suffers the pains of death.

The Lord Himself forgives and unites us with the Guru; the True One conquers the tortures of death.

The mind can't rescue itself — it is rescued, by grace, and united to the Guru.
The deeper layer

The mind cannot rescue itself; grace does it.

The verse asks an honest question. Ih man mugaDh kahhu ki-o rahsee — tell me, how can this foolish mind be saved? Without understanding, it suffers the pain of death.

The answer is grace. Aapay bakhsay satgur maylai — the One Himself forgives, and brings us to the True Guru. Think of a kid stuck high in a tree who cannot climb down alone. A parent comes with a ladder. The mind is rescued the same way, joined to the Guru. And the True One overcomes the pain of death.

A Question to Sit With

When has help for your own mind come from beyond your own effort?
