The Same Mind Is Ugly or Beautiful by What It Holds

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥
ih man karmaa ih man Dharmaa.
This mind commits its deeds of karma, and this mind follows the Dharma.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਤੇ ਜਨਮਾ ॥
ih man panch tat tay janmaa.
This mind is born of the five elements.
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੂੜਾ ॥
saakat lobhee ih man moorhaa.
This foolish mind is perverted and greedy.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੩॥
gurmukh naam japai man roorhaa. ||3||
Chanting the Naam, the mind of the Gurmukh becomes beautiful. ||3||

In plain words

This mind does its deeds of karma, and this mind follows the Dharma; this mind is born of the five elements.

This foolish mind is perverse and greedy — but chanting the Name, the Gurmukh's mind becomes beautiful.

The same mind is ugly or beautiful depending on what it holds.
The deeper layer

The same mind can be ugly or beautiful, depending on what fills it.

Ih man karmaa ih man Dharmaa — this mind does deeds, and this mind follows Dharma, the right way to live. The mind is the doer of both. It is also made from panch tat, the five elements that make up the world.

Left to itself, this mind is foolish and greedy. But gurmukh naam japai man roorhaa — when the Gurmukh repeats the Name, the mind becomes beautiful. Think of a glass. Fill it with muddy water, and it looks dirty. Fill it with clear water, and it sparkles. It is the same glass. What it holds makes the difference.

A Question to Sit With
