Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When the body perishes, whose wealth is it? Without the Guru, how is the Name obtained?
The wealth of the Name is my Companion and Helper; night and day, center your love on the Immaculate One.
When our time here ends, the things we piled up belong to someone else. The Name stays with us.
Tan binsai dhan kaa ko kahee-ai — when the body is gone, whose is the wealth? Tan means body, and dhan means wealth. The question shows how silly it is to hoard what we can't keep.
There is one wealth that stays. Raam naam dhan sang sakhaa-ee — the wealth of the Name is my friend and helper. Think of a school backpack at the end of the year. You throw out the old papers. But what you learned, you carry with you. The Name is like that. Another shabad in this raag says the same.
What wealth would still be yours after the body is gone?
